Dry Mouth

Xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth, is a condition in which the salivary glands decrease or stop saliva production. The most common causes are from various medical conditions, cancer treatments (especially radiation to the neck or face), and some medications.

Dry mouth can vary in severity and may cause any or all of these:

  1. Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  2. Changes in the taste in foods
  3. Speech difficulty
  4. Social anxiety from bad breath
  5. Sore throat, apthous ulcers and a burning sensation of the tongue
  6. Cheeks, lips and tongue stick to palate or teeth
  7. Rampant decay

Depending on the severity, there are many treatments available, from strict home care regimens with fluoride to prescribed saliva substitutes. Consult Dr. Kavouklis if you feel you have dry mouth.
