Whitening Instructions for Custom Trays

This procedure is safe when used as directed, and has proven effective for most patients. It is important to follow all instructions.

The amount of whitening that occurs is dependent on three factors: 1) the length of time each day/evening the tray is worn; 2) the number of days the tray is worn, and 3) on external stains vs. internal stains. External stains will respond more quickly than internal deep stains.

MATERIALS USED:

  1. A custom tray to contain the whitening gel.
  2. Opalescence whitening gel, which contains fluoride and 15% carbamide peroxide. This material has been used for years as an oral antiseptic.
  3. One or two pre-filled syringes of UltraEz desensitizing gel.

Recommended Treatment

For best results and the most use out of your gel, wear from bedtime to awakening. If your teeth become sensitive, skip a day or two and use the UltraEz in sensitive area for 30 minutes 1 to 2 days, then start the process again. Keep the whitening gel and fluoride syringes in the refrigerator at all times. Shelf life is about two years if refrigerated.

Procedure:

Whitening options:

  • whiten only until you reach desired shade
  • Touch up when needed. Perhaps after your next prophy or before special occasions
  1. Floss then brush teeth thoroughly.
  2. Express one dot of gel into the middle of the front surface of each tooth in the tray skipping all molars. Use one third of a syringe for each arch per daily treatment. Dispose of syringe properly.
  3. Seat the tray completely and firmly onto the teeth.
  4. Gently wipe off excess gel with clean finger. DO NOT USE TONGUE. Suction only draws more gel out of the tray. Gel is not harmful if swallowed or laying in the mouth and tongue all night.

It is best to go right to bed after following the above procedure. Activity and talking causes gel to escape.

Whitening process may reverse by what you eat. It is not recommended to continuously touch-up.

Everyone’s teeth respond differently because your teeth become porous.

The following substances should be avoided after whitening:

  • Coffee, Tea, Soy Sauce
  • Tobacco products, Berries
  • Mustard, Ketchup, Red Sauces
  • Cola, Red wine
  • Colored drinks using dye such as grape, Gatorade, Cranberry, etc.
